The Last Word

Convictions
She has more hair than she needs;
In the sun ’tis a woe to me!
And her voice is a string of colored beads,
Or steps leading into the sea.

She loves me all that she can,
And her ways to my ways resign;
But she was not made for any man,
And she never will be all mine.

-From "Witch Wife," by Edna St. Vincent Millay

Secrets
The full story.
Corinna spent the first twelve years of her life being somewhat abused in foundling homes, where her ferocity and tenacity earned her the surname "Stonewall." She bribed and eavesdropped herself an education. When she was twelve, in transit between homes she cut her hair and disguised herself as a boy, becoming the Rhysbridge Home's new Folk Keeper. She was their best Folk Keeper, devoted and determined, though she had somehow lost that ultimate edge over the Folk, the Last Word.

When Corinna was fifteen, the dying Lord Merton ordered his cousin Sir Edward and rather younger wife Lady Alicia to take Corinna on as Folk Keeper and into their family at the estate Marblehaugh Park. While there, Corinna discovered she had even more mysterious powers, and befriended Finian Hawthorne, Lady Alicia's son by her first marriage. But there were many secrets at Marblehaugh Park.

Sir Edward figured out that Corinna was the late Lord Merton's only child, and intent on finally claiming the estate for himself, he left her in the Folk Caverns for dead. He didn't count on how resourceful she was, or on her claiming all the powers she had as her mother's daughter, and thus one of the sealfolk. Powers like the Last Word. Corinna made it out of the caverns alive.

In another confrontation with Sir Edward, she and her newly found sealskin were badly burned, but saved from death (partially with the aid of Finian). When she attempted to enter to the sea as a seal for the first time, she discovered that the burned parts of the sealskin would not allow for the change back again. Panicked at the thought of losing all she had on land, she ripped it off and left it in the sea. She has not regretted this.

She went back to land, accepted her role as Lady Merton, and, more importantly, Finian's proposal. She was quite happy with her life.

Then she was brought to Moksa University.
